Two senior cabinet members in River State, Attorney General Zacchaeus Adangor and Finance Commissioner Isaac Kamalu, have resigned following Governor Siminalayi Fubara‘s recent government reshuffle.
The resignations signal ongoing political instability in the oil-rich South-South state amidst efforts to foster peace.
Isaac Kamalu, in his resignation letter, addressed to the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Tammy Danagogo, expressed his inability to adapt to his new role at the Ministry of Employment Generation and Economic Empowerment, citing the prevailing atmosphere of discord as a hindrance to his performance.
“It is impossible for me to give my best in an atmosphere of rancour,” Kamalu stated, referencing the lack of peace despite the peace pact brokered by President Bola Tinubu last December.
The reshuffle, which took place on Tuesday, also saw Zacchaeus Adangor being shifted from his long-held position as Attorney General to oversee the Ministry of Special Duties at the Governor’s Office.
Both commissioners stepped down in December during a political crisis involving Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Their brief resignation was part of a larger political fallout that briefly saw them out of office until a peace agreement facilitated by President Tinubu reinstated them.
