Popular Nigerian music artist, Habeeb Okikiola, known by his stage name Portable, has spent a night in police custody due to unmet bail conditions.
This follows his recent arrest linked to an alleged failure to settle a ₦14 million debt incurred from the purchase of a G-Wagon from a Lagos car dealer.
The incident, which unfolded on Tuesday, saw Portable taken into custody by Lagos police.
Despite the immediate setting of bail conditions, the artist struggled to meet the stipulated requirements, resulting in his extended detention.
Speaking to Punch, a source close to the matter detailed that the arrest came after Portable refused to pay the substantial amount owed, prompting legal action by the car dealer.
The source said, “He is still in police custody as we speak. When he paid N13m for the G-Wagon that cost N27m and refused to pay the balance, the car dealer asked him to return the vehicle when his excuse was that it was bad but he also refused.”
Confirming that Portable passed the night in a police cell after he was arrested, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, when contacted on Wednesday, said the musician was still in the custody of the police.
Hundeyin said, “He has presented no reliable surety yet so he (Portable) is still with us.”
