Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has entered a plea of not guilty to charges of financial misconduct during his tenure.
The arraignment, which took place on Wednesday at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, was overseen by Justice Maryann Anenih.
Emefiele faced a four-count charge brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The charges stem from allegations that he unlawfully approved the printing of ₦684.5 million at an inflated rate of ₦18.96 billion.
This action was part of the naira swap policy implemented under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The EFCC accuses Emefiele of contravening legal directives with the intent to harm the public interest. Further accusations detail that Emefiele unlawfully sanctioned the withdrawal of ₦124.8 billion from the Federation’s Consolidated Revenue Fund.
