Ijaw Group, Urges Military To Withdraw From Igbomotoru

The Ijaw Integrity Group (IIG), a prominent think-tank representing the interests of the Ijaw people, has called for the withdrawal of military troops from Igbomotoru Town in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

This call comes in the wake of recent military incursions into the community following the tragic killing of four army officers and 13 soldiers in Okuama community of Delta State on March 14, 2024.

High Chief Walter Moneyman, Chairman of the Ijaw Integrity Group, emphasized the need for the military to withdraw its presence from Igbomotoru, echoing similar actions taken in Okuama, Delta State.

He commended the military for heeding the call to vacate Okuama, stating that it has helped reduce tension in the area.

Moneyman stressed that the withdrawal of soldiers from Okuama should be mirrored in Igbomotoru, despite the absence of any direct connection between the two communities.

He highlighted the significant impact of military presence on the residents of Igbomotoru, who have been living in fear of reprisals and facing disruptions to their daily lives.

According to Moneyman, the continued presence of soldiers in Igbomotoru has created a climate of fear and uncertainty, particularly among children who are unable to attend school comfortably in the presence of armed troops.

He urged the military to conduct future operations with professionalism and empathy to avoid causing harm to innocent civilians.

In his message to the residents of Igbomotoru, Moneyman called for peace, adherence to the law, and respect for constituted authority to maintain harmony in the community.

He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the military and local communities to ensure security while safeguarding the rights and well-being of civilians.

The Ijaw Integrity Group’s appeal underscores the ongoing challenges faced by communities affected by military operations and the importance of balancing security measures with respect for human rights and civilian livelihoods.
