A yet-to-be-identified middle-aged man died while watching a football match at a local bar along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
The incident occurred on Thursday, May 16, according to reports gathered by PUNCH Online.
The deceased, a regular customer at the open bar, reportedly walked in, sat down, and began watching the match.
However, he fell asleep during the game and, despite efforts to wake him after the match ended, he was found to be motionless.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said it was reported at the Elere Police Division.
He provided details of the incident in a statement.
“The owner of a bar located along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway reported at Elere Division that at about 6:15 pm on Thursday.
One of his male customers in his 50s, whose name and address are yet unknown, came into the open bar to sit and watch television,” Hundeyin said.
“He was later observed to be sleeping on the chair and in an attempt to wake him up, it was discovered that he was lifeless.
The scene was visited by detectives of the division, and the deceased was seen lifeless on the chair without any mark of violence.”
Hundeyin further stated that the body had been transported to the Mainland General Hospital mortuary in Yaba, Lagos State, for an autopsy.
“Efforts to trace his family are in progress,” he added.
The incident has caused a stir among local patrons and residents, raising concerns about the health and well-being of individuals frequenting such establishments.
The police have assured the public that the matter is being thoroughly investigated and have urged anyone with information regarding the deceased’s identity or family to come forward.
