Former Minister of Education, Mrs Obiageli Ezekwesili, has declared her refusal to adopt the old national anthem reinstated by President Bola Tinubu, labeling the law as “obnoxious.”

In a statement posted on her social media handle on Wednesday, Ezekwesili expressed her firm stance against the newly signed bill, asserting her right to dissent.

“Let it be known to all and sundry that I, Obiageli ‘Oby’ Ezekwesili, will, whenever asked to sing the Nigerian National Anthem, sing: ‘Arise, O compatriots, Nigeria’s call obey…'”

she stated, reaffirming her allegiance to the current anthem.

Ezekwesili continued, “Oh God of creation, direct our noble cause, guide our leader’s right…,” emphasizing her commitment to the existing anthem’s lyrics.

The former minister’s statement underscores her rejection of the legislation and her adherence to the anthem adopted since the country’s independence.

Meanwhile, in the lower chamber, the debate over the general principles of the bill was led by its sponsor, Julius Ihonvbere, who highlighted the importance of patriotism and nationalism.

The bill, which prompted Ezekwesili’s response, was passed by the 10th Senate following a review of a report presented by Tahir Monguno, the lawmaker representing Borno North Senatorial District and chair of the Judiciary Committee.
