The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has called on organised labour to demonstrate consideration and patriotism in ongoing negotiations for a new national minimum wage.

In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, the minister emphasized the government’s commitment to securing a fair and realistic wage for Nigerian workers amid economic recovery efforts.

“We appeal to organised labour and indeed, other relevant stakeholders to be considerate and patriotic in their demands, recognising that our economy is still recovering from the devastating effects of the pandemic and other global economic shocks,” Onyejeocha stated.

Highlighting the government’s dedication to prioritizing citizens’ welfare, she urged all stakeholders to show patriotism and understanding during this critical period of economic revitalization led by President Bola Tinubu.

Onyejeocha acknowledged the complexity of economic challenges faced by Nigerians and stressed the importance of collective efforts to overcome them.

“As a government, we recognize the importance of ensuring that our citizens receive a decent standard of living, and we are committed to making this a reality,” she affirmed.

The minister noted that ongoing negotiations with organised labour represented a significant step towards securing a fair wage for Nigerian workers.

She expressed optimism for a positive outcome following intense discussions.

“In light of the current economic conditions, we have made a concessionary move from N57,000 to N60,000,” Onyejeocha added.
