In the wake of the ongoing nationwide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), some members enforcing the strike were reportedly attacked and are currently receiving treatment at the Plateau State Specialist Hospital.
The strike, declared over the Federal Government’s failure to meet the NLC’s demand for a minimum wage of N494,000, has seen various incidents of tension and unrest across the country.
In Jos, the Plateau State capital, trouble erupted when members of the NLC enforcement team faced aggression from louts at a private transport company while carrying out strike enforcement activities.
According to Comrade Sunday Ayodele, the Vice Chairman of NLC in Plateau State, the incident occurred at a motor park located at Yakubu Gowon Way, opposite NTA Jos, where members of the enforcement team were targeted by the louts.
“Immediately the touts at the park saw us arriving at the gate, they started hurling stones at us, thinking we are members of the NURTW (National Union of Road Transport Workers),” Ayodele explained.
He further revealed, “Unknown to us, there is a pending dispute between the private transport company and NURTW Jos.
And the touts in the park simply descended on our members.
Before we could understand the reason for the attack, the touts had injured 4 members of NLC.”
The situation escalated until the intervention of security agencies restored calm at the park.
In response to the attack, the NLC enforcement team withdrew from the park to allow peace to prevail.
