Count Us Out Of NLC Strike – Kano Doctors

Despite the ongoing nationwide strike called by organised labour, medical practitioners in Kano State have declared their commitment to remain on duty, ensuring healthcare services continue uninterrupted.

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Kano branch affirmed that doctors and medical professionals across the state will not participate in the strike, unlike other sectors where operations have been halted.

The strike, which has led to the closure of banks, hospitals, airports, and government offices nationwide, was declared by organised Labour to press for the Federal Government to meet its demand for a minimum wage of N494,000.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, had expressed concerns over the wage demand, stating that meeting it would destabilize the economy and jeopardize the welfare of over 200 million Nigerians.

Despite last-minute interventions by the leadership of the National Assembly to avert the strike, labour unions proceeded with the industrial action, mobilizing their affiliates nationwide.

In an interview on Monday, Dr Abdurrahman Ali, Secretary of the NMA in Kano, emphasized the association’s stance: “We are a professional body and we are not part of NLC so we are not embarking on any strike action.”

He further clarified, “All doctors and medical practitioners will be on duty at their various hospitals.

This may not be 100 per cent, but we are not part of it. Of course, you may go there and discover that the person to bring out your file is also away, but our members are on the ground.”

The decision by medical professionals to remain on duty comes as a relief to many patients who rely on healthcare services, especially during this period of uncertainty.
