The City of David Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Lagos has suspended Pastor Idowu Iluyomade following public outcry over the extravagant birthday party of his wife.
The party shortly after the death of Herbert Wigwe, former Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of Access Holdings Plc.
According to ChurchTimes, a top pastor within the church, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed, “The governing council decided to suspend him.
I think it’s a decision in the right direction. Though some believe it is coming late.”
The suspension reportedly came after widespread criticism of the lavish celebration, which occurred in the wake of Wigwe’s tragic death.
His suspension was communicated via a letter over the weekend, with Pastor Charles Kpandei of RCCG Resurrection Parish of Region 11 appointed as his replacement.
Wigwe, a prominent member of the Parish, passed away alongside his wife, son, and a former Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, in February.
Despite the mourning period, Pastor Iluyomade’s wife hosted a lavish birthday party at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island Lagos, drawing ire from many.
Social commentator Chukwudi Iwuchukwu criticized the event, stating, “After all this charity and benevolence, the right thing and common sense dictate that it is offensive and not appropriate to throw a lavish party a week after the death of such a man whose tithe and benevolence sustained your husband’s ministry when his body is still cold.”
The disapproval extended to funeral arrangements, as the City of David Parish was notably excluded from Wigwe’s funeral programs, despite his active involvement in the church during his lifetime.
During a service organized for Wigwe, Pastor Iluyomade had praised the deceased for his philanthropy and commitment to the church’s projects, highlighting his substantial financial contributions.
