Members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), have effectively shut down the National Assembly in compliance with the indefinite strike declared by organized labour.
Our correspondent, who visited the National Assembly to assess the situation, found the entrance and exit gates blocked by two coastal buses arranged by PASAN.
The shutdown comes as part of the nationwide strike initiated by organized labour over the federal government’s refusal to increase the minimum wage above N60,000.
Despite a three-hour meeting with the National Assembly leadership and top officials of the Executive arm of government, no compromise was reached, prompting the commencement of the strike.
Following the failure to reach a compromise on the new minimum wage by the tripartite committee set up by the federal government, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) commenced the nationwide strike today.
Nigerianewstoday.com reported that electricity and water supply to the Senate and the House of Representatives buildings, along with other facilities in the National Assembly complex, have been shut down by PASAN in solidarity with the strike.
