The University of Ilorin has expelled a 100-level student for allegedly demanding a ransom from the parents of a missing colleague, according to the institution’s weekly bulletin released on Monday.

The announcement, signed by the Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, detailed the university’s actions against the student, identified as Olanrewaju Abdulkabir, from the Department of Information Technology, Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences.

In addition to Abdulkadri’s expulsion, the university also rusticated a 400-level student, Segun Michael Oyewole, for allegedly assaulting a fellow female student.

Oyewole, who hails from the Department of Counsellor Education, Faculty of Education, was rusticated for one academic session.

The bulletin emphasized that these actions were in line with the recommendations of the Students’ Disciplinary Committee following its 220th/221st meeting.

The university stated, “The measures were necessary to maintain discipline and uphold the integrity of the institution.”

The incident involving Abdulkadri is particularly concerning as it involves extortion and exploitation during a distressing situation for the victim’s family.

The bulletin noted, “The expulsion of Olanrewaju Abdulkabir Abdulkadri with matriculation number 22/52HL004 was due to his reprehensible conduct, which goes against the ethical standards and values upheld by the University of Ilorin.”

Meanwhile, Oyewole’s case of physical assault was treated with seriousness, reflecting the university’s zero-tolerance policy towards violence.

“Segun Michael Oyewole’s rustication for one academic session is a clear message that the university will not condone any form of violence or intimidation against its students,” the bulletin added.

This is not the first time UNILORIN has taken disciplinary action against its students.

In April, the university rusticated 19 students for various offences including misconduct, theft, examination malpractice, hostel bed-space racketeering, extortion, assault, and admission racketeering.

The university’s management has urged students to adhere strictly to the institution’s rules and regulations.

“We call on all students to conduct themselves in a manner befitting the values of the University of Ilorin.

Any breach of conduct will be met with appropriate disciplinary action,” the statement concluded.
