The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended the nationwide strike for one week following a joint extraordinary National Executive Council meeting of the unions on Tuesday morning.
This decision comes after the Federal Government’s invitation of Labour leaders to a meeting at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, following the shutdown of banks, schools, government offices, among others.
The meeting on Monday night resulted in an agreement between the federal government and organised labour on a new minimum wage that will be “above N60,000”.
In a statement released after the meeting, it was stated that, “The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria is committed to a National Minimum Wage that is higher than N60,000.”
As part of the resolutions reached, the Tripartite Committee is to meet daily for the next week with the aim of arriving at an agreeable National Minimum Wage.
Labour has also undertaken to convene a meeting of its organs immediately to consider this commitment.
Furthermore, it was emphasized that no worker would be victimized as a result of the industrial action.
