Tems: How I Avoided Distracting Producers

Grammy award-winning Nigerian artiste, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has opened up about her strategy to avoid distractions while working with producers in the music studio.

She revealed that she intentionally opts for baggy clothing to reduce the attention from producers and maintain her focus on creating music.

During an episode of the ‘Flow With Korty’ show, Tems shared her personal experience and how she nearly lost confidence in her appearance.

She explained that she used to feel uncomfortable with her body and found it challenging to navigate unfamiliar studio environments as a budding artist.

“I used to not always like my body.

I just didn’t understand a lot of things.

I was going to a lot of studios alone, meeting people I didn’t know and had never met,” she expressed.

To address the issue, Tems made a conscious decision to shift from wearing attractive outfits to donning baggy clothes when heading to the studio, emphasizing that her primary goal is to focus on creating music.

“So, because of my objective, which is just wanting to make music, if my being attractive is disturbing you and stopping me from achieving my goal, I am going to help you.

So, when I go to the studio, I wear baggy clothes and I’m in my alpha mode because I want you to not be seduced by me,” she disclosed.

Tems, who has established herself as a prominent figure in the Nigerian music industry, gained international recognition following her collaboration with Wizkid on the hit song ‘Essence’ in 2020.

Her musical talent and artistry earned her a Grammy award in February 2023 for the ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance’ category, in recognition of her contribution to Future’s 2022 hit song ‘Wait for U’, featuring Drake.

This prestigious achievement further solidifies Tems’ position as a remarkable and influential artist in the music landscape.
