Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tendered his resignation on Wednesday to the country’s President Droupadi Murmu, following the recommendation of his cabinet to dissolve the lower house of parliament, Lok Sabha.

In accordance with protocol, President Murmu accepted the resignation of Modi and the council of ministers, while requesting Modi to continue serving as the prime minister until the new government is formed, as per an official from the President’s House.

This development marks a customary step before the formation of the next government in the country.

The Election Commission of India released official data on its website early Wednesday, indicating that the ruling National Democratic Alliance, led by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, is poised to form the next government.

In response to the unfolding events, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, “I have tendered my resignation as per our constitutional obligations, and I am committed to ensuring a smooth transition of power for the betterment of the nation.”

The President’s House official also emphasized, “President Murmu has acknowledged Prime Minister Modi’s resignation and has sought his continued leadership during the transitional phase.”
