The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has urged Nigerians to remain calm amidst the current economic challenges facing the country.
Speaking at the National Executive Council of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Akume outlined several measures the government is taking to address the hardships while cautioning against actions that may jeopardize the administration’s efforts.
Akume highlighted the tough situation the current administration inherited, noting that the country’s foreign reserves were at zero when they took over.
He emphasized the massive reforms carried out by the president and defended the subsidy removal of fuel, stating, “People should stop shouting; they need to know the actual truth.”
He also emphasized that the government has implemented palliatives to cushion the effects of the reforms, including the 35,000 naira wage award for workers and the allocation of funds to support various sectors.
In response to recent disruptions, Akume condemned the shutdown of the national grid, labeling it a treasonable offense.
He stressed the government’s efforts in rebuilding the economy and denounced actions that seek to undermine this progress.
Reflecting on the process of setting the minimum wage, Akume explained that it is an exclusive issue in the constitution and reassured the public that the government is working diligently to address the economic challenges.
He stressed the importance of collaboration between the church and the government in providing essential services and emphasized the government’s focus on productivity and economic stability.
In conclusion, Senator George Akume reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the economic challenges and emphasized the need for collaboration and understanding during these tough times.
