Super Eagles recite old national anthem in Benin match

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were seen reciting the old national anthem, ‘Arise O’ Compatriot,’ before their 2026 World Cup qualifier match against Benin Republic on Monday.

The host country played the old anthem, apparently unaware of Nigeria’s recent change in national anthem.

The situation drew attention on social media, with some users speculating that Benin Republic might not be informed about the recent legislative change in Nigeria’s national anthem.

On May 29, President Bola Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law, officially reinstating the old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”

Meanwhile, Coach Finidi George has announced three changes to the starting lineup of the Super Eagles for the match against Benin Republic.

Stanley Nwabali retains his position as the goalkeeper.

The back four will feature Tanimu Benjamin, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, and Bright Osayi-Samuel.

In the midfield, Raphael Onyedika replaces Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, joining Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi.

In attack, Terem Moffi will take the place of Paul Onuachu, Samuel Chukwueze replaces Kelechi Iheanacho, and Ademola Lookman keeps his spot in the starting eleven.
