June 12: Nigerian Youth Must Hold Leaders Accountable To Safeguard Democracy — Rinsola Abiola

In an exclusive interview, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Citizenship & Leadership, Rinsola Abiola, discussed her office’s focus on youth development, citizenship, and leadership.

Abiola highlighted the need for reform at the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre (CLTC) and discussed initiatives to enhance civic education and youth leadership development.

Abiola emphasized the importance of engaging young women in leadership roles and announced plans for a leadership development program that will benefit both genders.

Regarding skill acquisition programs, Abiola mentioned the Nigerian Youth Academy (NiYA) and the Corpreneur Scheme, both aimed at empowering young Nigerians with valuable skills and economic opportunities.

When asked about the administration’s approach to tackling youth unemployment, Abiola discussed the government’s efforts to create an enabling business environment and increase access to capital for young entrepreneurs.

She also mentioned the allocation of funds to startups and early-stage businesses owned by young people.

On the significance of democracy, Abiola described it as a symbol of freedom and emphasized the role of citizens in shaping the trajectory of their country.

She expressed gratitude for the recognition of June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day and highlighted the importance of active participation in public affairs for young Nigerians.

In terms of youth representation in governance, Abiola commended the administration for appointing young people to key positions, emphasizing the genuine belief in youth representation in governance.

She encouraged young people to engage actively in public affairs and make their voices heard.

When asked about her motivations and challenges in advocating for youth and gender issues, Abiola stressed her belief in equity and justice and highlighted the need to empower underrepresented groups to enhance their participation in decision-making processes.
