IGP Suspends Special Promotions In Police

In a decisive move to address concerns within the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the immediate suspension of special promotions.

The IGP emphasized that the practice of special promotions has been undermining the professionalism and dedication of officers, and warned that any further lobbying for such promotions will result in disciplinary action.

Speaking at a recent decoration ceremony for 15 newly promoted senior officers, Egbetokun expressed his displeasure with the extent to which some officers have gone to lobby for special promotions.

He stated, “Special promotions have been jeopardising the job of officers. Henceforth, anyone recommended for special promotions from powers above will be disciplined.”

Egbetokun clarified that any future need for special promotions will be managed directly by the police management, ensuring a fair and transparent process.

He also addressed the issue of undue soliciting for postings, issuing a stern warning that anyone found guilty of this act would face legal consequences.

The IGP’s declarations came during the decoration ceremony, where one Deputy Inspector-General of Police, 11 Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, and 15 Commissioners of Police were honored with their new ranks.

This event highlighted the ongoing efforts to promote merit and integrity within the force.

Egbetokun’s statements underscore his commitment to maintaining discipline and order within the police force.

“We are determined to ensure that all promotions are based on merit and not through lobbying or undue influence,” he added.

The move aims to bolster the morale of officers who have diligently served without resorting to unethical means for career advancement.

This decision has been met with support from various quarters within the police force, as it promises to enhance fairness and accountability in the promotion process.
