Finidi George Resigns As Super Eagles Coach

Finidi George has resigned from his role as the coach of the Super Eagles after overseeing just two games without securing a win.

This follows a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic on matchday 4 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, extending Nigeria’s winless streak to four games.

The news of George’s departure was confirmed by former Super Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, on his X account on Saturday. He wrote, “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”

A source within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) corroborated the development, indicating that the federation is actively seeking a new manager for the team.

The source also suggested that the NFF is considering reducing the salary of the head coach in their next appointment.

Finidi George, 53, was appointed as the Super Eagles coach in May following the departure of Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro after the 2023 African Cup of Nations.

Finidi, who previously managed Enyimba, took temporary charge of the national team during the March international friendly doubleheader against Ghana and Mali.

NFF Vows to Secure World Cup Qualification

Amidst the uncertainty surrounding the Super Eagles’ coaching situation, the NFF president, Ibrahim Gusau, has reassured fans that the federation is committed to ensuring Nigeria qualifies for the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Gusau made this statement on Thursday in Abuja, following a closed-door meeting with the Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Owan Enoh. The meeting was convened to address Nigeria’s disappointing performance in the World Cup qualifiers.

“It’s a very sad moment for Nigerian football. We cannot run away from that,” Gusau acknowledged. “But all I want to assure is that we are working tirelessly in conjunction with the minister to see that we come out with holistic measures that will change the face of the entire system so that we can move forward.”

“Don’t forget, it is still possible, and I want to assure you that we are going to fight it to the latter and Nigeria will qualify for the World Cup.”

“This is not something I will just say now but very soon you are going to see major steps that NFF would come out with and by the grace of God, those measures that we are going to take will lead us to qualify for the next World Cup,” he added.
