Protesters Pull Down Wike’s Statue In Rivers

Tension escalated in Rivers State as protesting youths pulled down the effigy of former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike.

The demonstration also saw the destruction of billboards and banners featuring Wike and the recently outgone Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Bar George Ariolu.

The incident took place within the premises of the Obio/Akpor LGA in Port Harcourt. Videos circulating on social media showed three youths struggling to bring down the statue, with more protesters joining in to successfully pull it from its base.

The protest is part of a broader unrest following the expiration of the three-year tenure of elected local government chairmen and ward councillors in Rivers State.

The protesters expressed their dissatisfaction with the current political situation, particularly targeting symbols associated with Wike’s administration.

One of the protesters was heard saying, “The minister is no longer needed here,” as they toppled the effigy.

This unrest follows a statewide protest where security personnel and civilians clashed, resulting in several injuries and heightened tensions across various LGAs.

The state government has called for calm and cooperation with security forces to restore order and prevent further violence. As the situation remains fluid, the authorities are closely monitoring developments to ensure peace is maintained.
