Nigerian singer Tems has made a remarkable mark at the 2024 BET Awards, held on Sunday night at Los Angeles’s Peacock Theater.
Tems clinched the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award for her hit song “Me & U,” triumphing over industry giants like Kirk Franklin, Shirley Caesar, and Maverick City.
Tems’ victory stands out as a significant achievement amidst a challenging night for other Nigerian artistes who faced tough competition.
Ayra Starr and Asake were both in the running for the Best International Act but ultimately lost to South Africa’s Tyla. Starr also missed out on the Best New Artist and BET Her awards, both of which were won by Tyla and Victoria Monét, respectively.
In another category, Seyi Vibez was outperformed by South Africa’s Makhadzi for the Best New International Act. Burna Boy, a prominent nominee, was defeated by Usher for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and by Kendrick Lamar for Best Hip-Hop Artist.
