King Charles III has extended his heartfelt congratulations to the England football team for reaching the final of Euro 2024, playfully urging them to clinch the title without any last-minute drama.
The British monarch sent his “warmest congratulations” following England’s 2-1 victory over The Netherlands on Wednesday night. As the team gears up for Sunday’s final against Spain, King Charles conveyed his “very best wishes” for the decisive match.
In his message, the King humorously reminded the team of the nail-biting moments that fans have endured throughout the tournament, including a last-minute equalizer against Slovakia in the second round, a nerve-wracking penalty shootout win over Switzerland in the quarter-finals, and Ollie Watkins’ 90th-minute goal that secured their place in the final.
“If I may encourage you to secure victory before the need for any last-minute wonder-goals or another penalties drama, I am sure the stresses on the nation’s collective heart rate and blood pressure would be greatly alleviated!” King Charles remarked. “Good luck, England.”
Prince William, President of the Football Association and a known Aston Villa supporter, praised Ollie Watkins, the Aston Villa striker, who scored the winning goal after coming off the bench.
“What a beauty, Ollie! Congratulations England! #EURO2024 Finalists,” wrote the Prince of Wales. William is expected to travel to Berlin for the final.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer, an Arsenal fan, watched parts of the semi-final while attending a NATO summit in Washington. He has confirmed that he will also be traveling to Berlin to support the team in the final.
