The Bishops of the Methodist Church in Nigeria have called on the Federal Government to implement policies aimed at curtailing inflation in the country.
They emphasized that failure to address the economic challenges facing Nigerians could lead to chaos and anarchy.
Speaking at the 41st annual council meeting of Bishops of the Methodist Church in Nigeria, held at Hoares Memorial Methodist Cathedral, Archdiocese of Lagos Mainland in Sabo, Lagos, the Bishops stressed the need for concerted efforts from the government to alleviate financial strain on consumers and maintain economic stability in the face of ongoing economic difficulties.
Prelate Dr. Oliver Ali Aba, speaking on behalf of the Bishops, expressed concern over the high rate of youth unemployment and its correlation with various social vices.
The Council urged the government and parents to take responsibility for empowering young people, highlighting the rising cases of teenage pregnancy, cultism, fraud, exam malpractices, political thuggery, prostitution, drug abuse, and other criminal activities among the youth.
The Bishops warned that failing to address these issues may lead to chaos and anarchy in the country, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
In addition to addressing economic concerns, the Council also called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts in tackling the escalating insecurity in the country.
The Bishops condemned the violent actions of criminals such as bandits, kidnappers, and armed robbers, demanding accountability for recent attacks on public institutions.
They urged security agencies to work collectively to find a comprehensive solution to the nation’s security challenges.
Meanwhile, Islamic cleric Imam Muideen Salman, speaking at the Fidau prayer of Mama Hajarat Akinleye at the Osun NYSC camp in Ede, charged the political class to prioritize the welfare of the masses and reduce greed and selfishness.
