In anticipation of the nationwide protests against bad governance set to begin on August 1, the Federal Government has declared all 256 custodial centres across Nigeria as “red zones,” emphasizing that these facilities must not be compromised under any circumstances.

The Controller General of Corrections (CGC), Hailey Nababa, issued a stern warning in a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja.

The statement, signed by the Service’s Spokesman, ACC Abubakar Danlami Umar, underscores the importance of maintaining the integrity of correctional facilities.

“In view of the purported national protest scheduled to hold on the first day of August 2024, the Nigerian Correctional Service wishes to inform the public that the Custodial Centres have been designated as red zones; therefore, any person or group of persons who have no business whatsoever should steer clear,” Nababa stated.

He further emphasized the critical role of these facilities in ensuring public safety and national security.

“Tampering with or attacking them will lead to a breakdown of law and order and further exacerbate the security of the society in general,” the CGC warned.

The statement also highlighted the government’s efforts to safeguard these institutions.

“Adequate security arrangements have been put in place to ensure that no correctional facility is defiled,” it read.

The Ministry of Interior Joint Taskforce (MOIJTF) has been activated to bolster security around custodial facilities nationwide.

The CGC, Haliru Nababa, expressed gratitude for the public’s ongoing cooperation in maintaining peace and order at correctional centres.

He encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activity or plans that could threaten these facilities.

“The public is also advised to report any suspicious plan or movement to our email: info@corrections.gov.ng or to our official website: www.corrections.gov.ng or call 09060004598 or 08075050006 directly,” Nababa advised.
