In a strategic move aimed at mitigating the skyrocketing costs of food items and alleviating hunger across Nigeria, the Federal Government, through the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has announced the suspension of import duties on essential food items, including rice, flour, and wheat.

The Comptroller-General of the NCS, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, disclosed this development yesterday, emphasizing the government’s commitment to tackling the surging prices of vital commodities.

The suspension is part of a broader effort to ease the economic burden on Nigerians amid global inflationary pressures.

“Global inflation is impacting nations worldwide, including Nigeria.

To address this, the Federal Government, through the Nigeria Customs Service, is suspending import duties and taxes on essential food items to make them more affordable,” Mr. Adeniyi stated.

He further elaborated on the measures being implemented to ensure the seamless execution of this policy.

“We are committed to implementing this measure seamlessly to address the problem of hunger in our nation.

We have streamlined export processes to ensure that Nigerian goods reach international markets efficiently.

We have introduced tools like the Advanced Ruling System, Authorized Economic Operator, and Time Release Study to enhance trade, stimulate the economy, and create opportunities,” he added.

The CG also highlighted the broader economic benefits of these initiatives, noting that, “Our farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs will now have a faster path to global markets, benefiting their families and communities.

We are also intensifying efforts with other agencies to avert the proliferation of arms and other dangerous weapons through our land, sea, and airports.

We believe in collective effort and peaceful progress to strengthen our borders.”

Addressing the wider implications of supply chain disruptions, Mr. Adeniyi warned that such disruptions affect foreign investments, distort trade, promote instability, increase scarcity, and hinder revenue collection.

“In these challenging times, let us unite in resilience and cooperation. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those who have embraced the path of peace and dialogue.

Your constructive engagement shows a commitment to our nation’s well-being; your cooperation is invaluable as we work to overcome these challenges and build a brighter future,” he said.

The Federal Government’s decision to suspend import duties on essential food items is expected to provide significant relief to households across the country, reducing the cost of staples and making them more accessible to the general public.

This measure, coupled with streamlined export processes and enhanced trade facilitation tools, aims to boost the economy and create opportunities for local producers.

As Nigeria navigates these economic challenges, the government calls for constructive engagement and cooperation from all Nigerians to overcome current difficulties and build a brighter future.

The NCS reassures the public of its commitment to implementing these measures effectively and ensuring that the benefits reach those most in need.
