The Nigerian military has taken over the AYA-Kubwa highway, a crucial artery connecting Gwarinpa—the largest housing estate in Africa—and other parts of Northern Nigeria, following violent outbreaks by protesters.

Initially peaceful, the demonstration escalated later in the day, with unruly elements hijacking the protest.

The protesters, mostly street urchins and criminals, began their disruptive activities by blocking and harassing motorists on the service lanes of the ten-lane highway.

As the situation intensified, they moved to the center of the road, setting up bonfires, blocking traffic, and extorting money from drivers.

Eyewitnesses reported that those who refused to pay were beaten, with the hoodlums brazenly ignoring the presence of policemen and civil defence operatives.

The chaos prompted a swift response from military authorities, who deployed troops and armored trucks to the scene.

The military secured the highway, cutting off access at Katampe roundabout and positioning armored vehicles at strategic locations to manage the situation and prevent further escalation.

However, the soldiers faced challenges in clearing the road of the large stones, tree trunks, and burnt tires left by the protesters.

The military’s presence temporarily restored order, but there are concerns about potential further deterioration of the situation as night approaches, especially if security forces withdraw from the area.

protests across Nigeria, as frustration over economic hardship and governance issues continues to manifest in violent and disruptive actions.

The authorities are urged to maintain a robust presence to prevent further chaos and ensure the safety of residents and commuters.
