Jamaican dancehall superstar Adidja Palmer, popularly known as Vybz Kartel, has been released from prison after serving 12 years of a life sentence.

Kartel, along with Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Andre St John, and Kahira Jones, was convicted in 2014 for the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.

The case took a dramatic turn in March 2024 when the Privy Council overturned the convictions, citing juror misconduct.

This led to an appeal concerning whether a retrial should be conducted.

In a landmark decision on Wednesday, the Court of Appeal of Jamaica ruled against a retrial, effectively bringing an end to the nearly 13-year legal saga.

Kartel’s release marks a significant moment in Jamaican legal and cultural history, as the artist has been a pivotal figure in dancehall music despite his incarceration.

The Court of Appeal’s decision concludes a lengthy and contentious legal battle, with Kartel and his co-defendants maintaining their innocence throughout.

The case had garnered widespread attention, both locally and internationally, not only for its legal complexities but also for its impact on Jamaica’s entertainment industry.

Kartel’s lawyer expressed relief and gratitude for the decision, stating, “Justice has finally been served. Mr. Palmer and his co-defendants have endured a long and difficult journey, but today’s ruling brings them freedom and the opportunity to continue their lives.”

As Vybz Kartel walks free, the dancehall community and fans worldwide await his next move, eager to see what lies ahead for the controversial and influential artist.
