109 Protesters Remanded In Prison Custody In Sokoto Following Arrest During Hunger Protests

All 109 protesters arrested during the nationwide hunger protest in Sokoto State have been remanded in prison custody.

This decision was made by a Mobile Court during its sessions on Thursday and Friday at the state police command.

The protesters, who were arrested over the first two days of the demonstrations, were brought before the court, presided over by Justice Umar Idris Marafa.

After hearing the pleas from the suspected protesters, Justice Marafa adjourned the case to August 15, 2024, for further proceedings.

He ordered that the suspects remain in custody until the next court date.

The Public Relations Officer of the Sokoto State Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ahmed Rufae, confirmed the court’s decision.

He stated, “All the protesters arrested by the police are currently in prison custody pending the date set for the continuation of the hearing on the matter.”

The protests in Sokoto have been suspended by the organizers following the actions of some miscreants who infiltrated the protests, vandalized public properties, and terrorized traders in the state capital.

The incident has raised concerns about the potential for peaceful demonstrations to be overshadowed by violent elements.
