Education Ministry Urges DSS Probe Into Same-Sex Marriage Debate Proposal

0

The Federal Ministry of Education has called for an urgent investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS) into a letter from the Creative Africa Initiative proposing a national debate on the topic, “Same-Sex Marriage Should Be Legalised in Nigeria.”

This call to action was made in a letter dated August 9, 2024, signed by Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry.

The ministry emphasized that the proposal contradicts Nigeria’s cultural and religious values, as well as existing laws.

Ministry’s Official Letter

In the official letter titled, “Request for Investigation into Letter from Creative Africa Initiative Regarding Same-Sex Marriage Debate,” the ministry highlighted the need for a thorough investigation into the issue due to its sensitive nature.

Dr. Sani-Gwarzo wrote, “I write to bring to your attention a matter of urgent national concern.

It has come to my notice that an organization, Creative Africa Initiative, has issued a letter not originating from the Federal Ministry of Education proposing to hold a national debate with the topic:

‘Same-Sex Marriage Should Be Legalized in Nigeria’ (letter attached).”

Concerns Over Cultural and Religious Values

The ministry expressed concerns that the proposed debate is “against the cultural and religious values of the majority of Nigerians” and directly “contravenes existing Nigerian laws.”

“This initiative is capable of causing widespread confusion and potentially inciting unrest within the country.

The introduction of such a topic into public discourse, especially through a formal debate, may have far-reaching consequences that could disrupt public peace and social cohesion,” the letter continued.

The letter further elaborated on the potential implications of the debate, stating that it “could be interpreted as a deliberate attempt to undermine the laws of Nigeria and destabilize societal norms, thereby causing unnecessary tension and division among the populace.”

Call for DSS Investigation

In light of these concerns, Dr. Sani-Gwarzo requested that the DSS investigate the origin and intentions behind the letter from the Creative Africa Initiative.

“It is crucial to ensure that such activities, which have the potential to incite discord, are thoroughly scrutinized and addressed appropriately,” he stated.

The letter concluded with a plea for the DSS to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves and to take necessary steps to safeguard the peace and stability of the nation.

“I trust that your esteemed office will treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves and take the necessary steps to safeguard the peace and stability of our nation,” Dr. Sani-Gwarzo said.

Public Reaction

As news of the letter spread, it sparked discussions among various stakeholders and members of the public.

While some view the proposal as a threat to the country’s values and legal framework, others argue that the conversation on same-sex marriage is necessary for progress and inclusion.
