Tinubu Pledges Bold Decisions To Move Nigeria Forward, Seeks Closer Ties With China

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to taking tough decisions to steer Nigeria toward growth, even when national consensus may be elusive.

The President made this declaration on Friday in Beijing, China, during a meeting with Nigerians living in the country, marking the conclusion of his official engagements.

Speaking to members of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO) China and other community members at the China World Hotel, Tinubu described his visit as “very good and successful,” highlighting the critical areas of cooperation with China, including infrastructure, trade, finance, energy, the green economy, and mining.

In a statement by his spokesman, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the President urged Nigerians in China to remain good ambassadors of the country, emphasizing the need for discipline and national service.

“What is uppermost in my mind is for you to continue representing Nigeria as good citizens. We will always celebrate our diversity. We cherish it, but this diversity is our commitment to serve,” Tinubu said.

He added that Nigeria could learn from China’s disciplined society, stating, “Without discipline and commitment, we cannot build a nation that is respected everywhere in the world.”

Tough Reforms Necessary for Progress

Addressing ongoing reforms in Nigeria, President Tinubu acknowledged the concerns about recent fuel price hikes but stressed the necessity of making bold decisions for the country’s development.

“Nigeria is going through reforms, and we are taking very bold and unprecedented decisions,” the President explained.

“Can we develop good roads, constant electricity, and quality schools if we are not willing to make tough decisions? We must pave the way for a blessed and talented nation.”

He also urged Nigerians abroad to contribute to nation-building by sharing their knowledge and experiences.

“The more you want everything free, the longer it takes to achieve meaningful development.

It is what you contribute and tell them at home that will reflect in the attitude of our people,” he said.

Key Takeaway from China: Infrastructure Development

To the applause of the audience, President Tinubu revealed his plans to replicate China’s infrastructure success in Nigeria.

He noted that creating an environment where businesses can flourish and children can receive quality education would be a priority.

“One economic action leads to another, and it is in your hands to build our nation. Mine is to provide the leadership, and I am committed to doing just that,” the President stated.

Tinubu assured the Nigerian community in China that the Bank of Industry is ready to collaborate with them to leverage investment opportunities back home.

Diaspora Requests Recognition of Nigeria as a Native English-Speaking Nation
During the meeting, Dr. Oche Barnabas, President of NIDO China, praised President Tinubu for strengthening Nigeria-China relations, especially in trade and investment.

He also requested the President’s assistance in advocating for Nigeria to be officially recognized as a native English-speaking nation in China, which could unlock job and educational opportunities for Nigerians.

“Over 70% of available international jobs in China are reserved for native English speakers. We believe Nigeria has a chance to receive similar recognition due to the fact that English is our official language,” Barnabas explained.

The President of NIDO China pledged the organization’s support for the administration’s initiatives and committed to using their resources to elevate Nigeria’s standing globally.

Tinubu concluded his visit by reassuring Nigerians in China that his administration remains focused on its goals and is supported by a capable team.

“We are focused, and I have a very good team,” he said, stressing that difficult but necessary decisions would continue to be made in the interest of the nation’s progress.
