Chelsea ended their five-game winless streak on Monday with a commanding 3-1 victory over relegation-battling Wolves, reclaiming their place in the Premier League’s top four.
Second-half goals from Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke proved decisive, overshadowing a costly mistake by goalkeeper Robert Sanchez that had briefly allowed Wolves back into the game.
Chelsea took the lead midway through the first half when Tosin Adarabioyo netted his first Premier League goal for the club. Adarabioyo controlled a deflected Reece James shot before calmly slotting home. The goal, initially flagged for offside due to a crowded penalty area, was awarded after a VAR review.
However, Wolves equalized just before halftime through Matt Doherty. Goalkeeper Sanchez fumbled an inswinging corner from Matheus Cunha under pressure, gifting Doherty the opportunity to smash the ball into the net.
Despite the setback, Chelsea dominated the second half. Marc Cucurella restored their lead on the hour mark, completing a brilliant move initiated by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s flick. Cucurella controlled the ball on his chest before finishing acrobatically.
Just five minutes later, Noni Madueke sealed the victory with his fourth goal of the season, heading in Trevoh Chalobah’s goal-bound effort.
Wolves managed a late chance when Cunha’s shot was palmed behind by Sanchez, but Chelsea maintained control to secure the win.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, in his debut season, made five changes to the squad following last week’s draw against Bournemouth. Key decisions included starting Cole Palmer, who overcame a pre-match injury doubt, and recalling Trevoh Chalobah from a loan spell at Crystal Palace.
Reflecting on the game, Maresca emphasized the importance of remaining grounded:
“This is about taking one game at a time. The team is improving, but we are not in the title race. Our focus is Champions League qualification.”
For Wolves, the loss leaves them hovering precariously above the relegation zone on goal difference. Manager Vitor Pereira, who initially enjoyed a positive start, has now overseen three consecutive defeats.
Wolves’ defensive struggles continue, with 51 goals conceded this season—the highest in the league. Their attacking edge, despite outscoring other relegation contenders, has been overshadowed by defensive lapses.
As the season progresses, Chelsea’s resurgence offers hope for a strong finish, while Wolves face an uphill battle to avoid the drop.
