Officials of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Dragon Squad, and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force have taken control of the Cross River State Assembly complex following the impeachment of the Assembly speaker, Elvert Ayambem.
Sources revealed that Ayambem was impeached on Tuesday over allegations of gross misconduct and financial misappropriation.
The motion for his removal, which had been gaining momentum for several months, was moved on the floor of the House by Effiong Ekarika, the member representing Calabar South 1, and seconded by Charles Omang.
As the impeachment proceedings unfolded, over 20 members of the Assembly signed in support of Ayambem’s removal.
Following the vote, the legislative mace was taken away by the members, symbolizing the conclusion of Ayambem’s tenure as speaker.
