The Senate has given its approval to the National Anthem Bill 2024, which seeks to reinstate the old anthem, Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”

The House of Representatives passed the bill on Thursday, paving the way for the Senate’s approval.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed confidence in the bill’s potential to restore a sense of national pride and historical continuity.

“The old anthem carries a profound historical significance and evokes a deep sense of patriotism among Nigerians.

Reinstating it will reconnect us with our roots,” Akpabio stated during the session.

Senator Aisha Ahmed, one of the bill’s key proponents, emphasized the importance of the anthem in uniting the nation.

“This anthem is more than just words and music; it represents our shared history and aspirations.

By bringing it back, we honor our past and inspire future generations,” she said.

The reinstatement of “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” has sparked mixed reactions across the country.

Some Nigerians view it as a positive step toward reviving national identity, while others argue that the current anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” adequately serves its purpose.

Cultural historian Dr. Chukwuemeka Nnaji highlighted the significance of the old anthem.

“The original anthem resonates with many who experienced Nigeria’s early post-independence years.

Its lyrics reflect the optimism and unity that characterized that era,” Nnaji explained.

However, not everyone is in favor of the change.

Social commentator Tunde Bakare raised concerns about the practical implications of switching anthems.

“Changing the anthem is a symbolic gesture, but it’s crucial to address the pressing issues facing the country today.

We need comprehensive reforms that go beyond symbolic changes,” Bakare remarked.

The bill now awaits President Tinubu’s assent to become law.

If signed, the old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” will officially replace the current anthem.

Further details will be provided as the story develops.
