Tragedy struck along the Awka-Onitsha Expressway in Anambra State on Friday night as a hit-and-run driver claimed the life of a female pedestrian, according to the state Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, the Commander of the FRSC in Anambra, revealed to newsmen on Saturday in Awka that the driver fled the scene after the incident, leaving the victim to her fate.
Irelewuyi pointed out that excessive speeding was likely the cause of the accident, which involved an unidentified driver of a Toyota Hiace commercial bus with no registration number, heading towards Upper Iweke, Onitsha.
Eyewitness accounts suggested that the driver, recklessly speeding, collided with the pedestrian, an adult female, before fleeing from the scene of the accident.
“According to eyewitness reports, the driver of the vehicle, who was on speed, rammed into a pedestrian female adult and zoomed off.
FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene and took the victim to Toronto Mortuary after the doctor confirmed her dead,” Irelewuyi said.
Expressing condolences to the family of the deceased, Irelewuyi cautioned motorists, particularly during the rainy season, to avoid speeding and adhere to specified speed limits to prevent avoidable accidents.
