The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has dismissed six staff members over allegations ranging from certificate forgery to sexual harassment, academic fraud, and other serious offenses.
This decision was made public on Wednesday by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, during a press briefing at the university’s Agbani campus in Enugu State.
The Vice-Chancellor revealed that the dismissals followed the conclusions reached during the 179th meeting of the University’s Governing Council, chaired by the Pro-Chancellor, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa.
The offenses leading to the dismissals included extortion, manipulation of results, holding two full-time jobs simultaneously, involvement in the preparation of fake transcripts, and the misappropriation of funds amounting to N98,259,314.65.
Professor Okolie expressed the Governing Council’s deep concern over the rising involvement of university staff in various fraudulent activities.
He emphasized that the Council has mandated the university’s management to take stringent measures to curb these vices.
“Council frowned at the spate of examination malpractices and directed Management to apply appropriate sanctions to concerned students, including their collaborators accordingly,” he stated.
He further added, “Council also directed the Vice-Chancellor to ensure immediate conclusion of disciplinary issues and to henceforth adopt a shame strategy in dealing with such matters.”
The Vice-Chancellor also took the opportunity to commend the Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Peter Mbah, for his unwavering support in providing the necessary equipment and resources that ensured the successful accreditation of the university’s Nursing Sciences and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science programs.
He acknowledged the Governor’s efforts in making funds available for the purchase of equipment and resource materials for the proposed verification of three new programs: Public Health, Radiography, and Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
Professor Okolie assured that the Governing Council remains committed to implementing the disruptive innovative goals set forth by Governor Mbah, aimed at enhancing the university’s standards and operations.
