The Nigerian Army has arrested Adeleye Ayomide, a 23-year-old man suspected to be behind the abduction and murder of Idowu Christiana, a 300-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State.
Christiana was reportedly kidnapped on Monday, August 19, along the Ikorodu-Yaba Road in Lagos State while on her way to the University of Lagos for her industrial training.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed on Thursday that the Army had officially handed over the suspect to them.
In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Lagos Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, wrote, “23-year-old Ayomide Adeleye has been handed over to #LagosPoliceNG by 9 Brigade #HQNigerianArmy.
The handover took place today, September 5, at about 2 p.m. Investigation is ongoing.”
Hundeyin’s post comes as the case continues to generate outrage across Nigeria, with many calling for justice for Christiana.
The hashtag #JusticeForChristianah has been trending on social media platforms, as Nigerians express their grief and demand that the culprit be brought to book.
One Twitter user, known as Man of Letters (#Letter_to_Jack), detailed the arrest process.
In a series of tweets, he explained how intelligence operatives tracked down Ayomide, who was discovered to have a personal relationship with the victim.
He wrote, “Operatives began an investigation into the suspect, whom they observed to have a mutual relationship with Christiana Idowu, especially judging by Instagram posts as they both commented on each other’s pages.
With all this information at hand, operatives began to track down his cell phone activities and text messages.”
The investigation led the operatives to the suspect’s family house in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
According to the tweet, “The cell phone tracking led them to his parent’s house, somewhere in Ikorodu.
Operatives then got confirmation of his presence in the building through active tracking of his mobile device.
Immediately, gallant personnel of the Nigerian Army 174bn swooped in on the suspect to conduct the arrest.”
Following the arrest, several incriminating items were found in the suspect’s possession, including the victim’s phone, a blue ITEL A56.
