In a surprising revelation, former Ivory Coast coach, Herve Renard, has disclosed that he was on the verge of accepting the position of head coach for Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
Renard, a two-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner, shared that he seriously considered the offer before ultimately turning it down.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been in pursuit of a permanent coach for the Super Eagles since the departure of Finidi George.
At present, Augustine Eguavoen serves as the interim manager, leading the national team into their upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers against Libya.
Renard, known for his success with Ivory Coast, Saudi Arabia, and France’s women’s national team, was a top contender for the Super Eagles’ managerial role.
In an interview with French sports outlet L’Équipe, as reported by Brilla FM, Renard said, “I almost went to Nigeria.
I weighed the pros and cons for several days, even weeks, before deciding to turn it down.
It was the best offer I had received, but ultimately, it wasn’t the right fit for me.”
The NFF continues its search for a new head coach as Nigeria gears up for crucial matches in their AFCON qualifying campaign.
