Sporting Lisbon Sack Coach Joao Pereira, Appoint Rui Borges As Replacement

Sporting Lisbon have parted ways with coach Joao Pereira, just over a month after he was appointed to replace Ruben Amorim, the club announced on Thursday.

Rui Borges, former Vitoria Guimaraes manager, has been named as Pereira’s successor.

Pereira, who stepped in when Amorim departed for English Premier League side Manchester United, has been shown the door following a sharp decline in the club’s form.

Sporting, who boasted a perfect record in the Primeira Liga before his appointment, have since slipped to second place after a goalless draw with Gil Vicente last weekend.

The team also struggled under Pereira in European competitions, losing his first four matches across the Premier League and Champions League.

The 43-year-old Borges, who takes over the reins, joins from Vitoria Guimaraes, where he guided the team to sixth place in the league and a second-placed finish in the group stage of the UEFA Conference League. Sporting hope Borges will stabilize the club’s performance and reignite their campaign.
